I have found you via Robert Wilson who says he worked with your community in the past. I also am a boggy pal of Casdok! Small world. I have an 11 year old daughter with DS - a completely undeserved blessing and blog about our lives exactly for the reasons you describe. Thank you for your writing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344206176869938099.post-20601688439354727542010-01-16T16:38:40.486-04:002010-01-16T16:38:40.486-04:00The last paragraph summed it up beautifully for me...The last paragraph summed it up beautifully for me.
Maybe in time the minority will become the majority.Casdokhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03497897393162856190noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344206176869938099.post-41618442777587736782010-01-16T11:24:59.465-04:002010-01-16T11:24:59.465-04:00Amazing and articulate response!

As Casdok said "Acceptance does not mean doing nothing" We help our son to learn new skills and do everything we can to help him reach HIS potential. We don't expect him to be "normal", whatever that is, and don't view him as a set of inabilities and shortcomings but as a PERSON with possibilities. We have never pursued or dreamed of curing him. God doesn't make mistakes. I don't think we should be messing with our children's brains and bodies with potentially unsafe and unecessary chemicals and treatments.

We are all made the way we are for a reason. I have learned over the years that even things that happen that might seem negative are opportunities for learning and that everything happens for a reason.

Kudos to you and your husband for taking a stand. I am now following your blog.

There are times I wonder why I blog about my son and our family life. I want to show people what a loving and happy family I have BECAUSE of our challenges not in spite of them. Our son's Autism has made us better people and made us closer as a family. Our son is a blessing and not a curse. Those of us going about our daily lives with joy and gratefullness with our children with intellectual disabilities need to keep putting our point of view out there.

God bless you and your family.Queenbuv3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10767805292831696201noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344206176869938099.post-81810279407886249502010-01-15T23:33:14.693-04:002010-01-15T23:33:14.693-04:00No matter how perfect we all think we are, we all ...No matter how perfect we all think we are, we all have our"disabilities".
See Jenn and Silas , they believe in people, regardless of how they present.Everybody has value.
This whole subject makes me think of Flowers For Algernon.
I am sure there are those for whom "normal" at any cost is preferable ! That's OK. But in the mean time,we should Live everyday completely. Love for the joy of loving and each day ,walk a mile in somebody else's shoes before we judge. Way to go Silas and Jenn. I am so proud of you !Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344206176869938099.post-75362667735525923512010-01-15T14:55:27.765-04:002010-01-15T14:55:27.765-04:00Hello Jenn,

I ahve spent the past thirty years working with and for people who have disabilities. It ahs been my post graduate classroom as they have taught me about life from many perspectives that noone else could.

I also blog and it is entitled A day in Helping where I address issues of service and what it means etc.

Thanks,

JoelJoel Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08711070910800132694noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6344206176869938099.post-44737441403443630182010-01-15T13:12:01.572-04:002010-01-15T13:12:01.572-04:00WOW! I have read too many such comments and they fill me with an anger and a fear which surprises me. I have learned to read a wonderful article on Ds and then skip the comment section because I don't like the taste of bile. I commend you for stepping out and being brave. I commend your husband for manning up and defending you and your boys. Kudos to all of you!Tarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12808674825863044909noreply@blogger.com
